Holi (Hinduism)

On March 19, 2011

Holi (Holli) is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs.

On the day before Holi (known as Holika Dahan), bonfires are lit, in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad accomplished when Demoness Holika carried him into the fire. The Demoness Holika was burnt but Prahlad, a staunch devotee of god Vishnu, escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion.

Holi is a joyous festival, celebrated by people throwing coloured powder and coloured water at each other, and referred to as the Festival of Colours. The date for Holi is set by the lunar Hindu calendar.
