About Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
Guru Nanak Dev Ji 1469-1539 was born near Lahore, now in Pakistan. His message is simple. He preached Oneness of God and Oneness of Humanity. He said; God is one. There is no other. Irrespective of where we come from, what is our ethnicity or religion, we all believe in the One. All religions have their own route to achieve oneness with God.
He forged the various communities together into a force for good. God is the creator, and is in the creation, we are part of his creation as humans we are the crown of his creation, and we have an opportunity to be one with Him.
He preached equality of mankind The Grace of God can come to the scholar, the illiterate, the high or the low, rich or poor. It does not depend on caste or social classification, knowledge, wisdom or penance, instead those who seek through, love service and humility.
He restored women to their rightful equal place in society.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled for nearly 20 years throughout the subcontinent, from Tashkent in Uzbekistan, in the north to Sri Lanka in the South east to Assam, north east to Nepal and Tibet, west to Mecca, Baghdad in Iraq. On his travels he carried his message of truth, love, peace, humility and service. Guru Ji had two companions, one was a Muslim musician Mardana and the other Bala a Hindu.
During the last 20 years of his life he lived as a householder showing people the way.
His teachings are summed up in three simple deeds:
Always remember God;
Earn your lively hood through honest means; and
Share with the needy.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s philosophy is inclusive.
He was followed by nine other Sikh Gurus in succession who nurtured the faith until 1708 when Guru Gobind Singh Ji the tenth Sikh Guru ordained the Sikh Holy Scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji an eternal Guru of the Sikhs.
What is unique with this scripture is that it contains the teachings thirty-five authors including Sikh Gurus; Hindu and Muslim Sains in the spirit of inclusiveness of all faiths
