srailiyyat to islamiyyat’ with Professor Ismail Albayrak who is the Fethul

lih Yucel\, Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology\, School of Philos

 ohn D’Alton jdal13@student.monash.edu.auAbstract: In a restricted sense\,
isra’iliyyat applies to the traditions and reports that contain elements o
f the legendary and religious literature of the Jews\, but more inclusivel
y and more commonly it also refers to Christian\, Zoroastrian and other Ne
ar Eastern elements including folklore. In other words\, every foreign ele
ment in Muslim exegesis is called isra’iliyyat. Muslims had used and are s
till using the Biblical and other sources in the interpretation of the Qur
’an. In this seminar the questions we will deal with are as follows. How t
he reports of non-Islamic materials took place in Islamic sources\, Is it
equally possible to use Qur’anic and other Islamic sources in the exegesis
of the Bible? In other words\, is it possible to develop the notion of is
lamiyyat as opposed to the notion of israiliyyat. How can the usage of Mus
lim sources in the exegesis of Bible contribute to Muslim-Christian/Jewish
dialogue.Professor Ismail Albayrak is the Fethullah Gullen Chair in the S
