Why Yes? Why Now? Multicultural Communities and the Voice: ECCV Forum

Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria invites you to:

Why Yes? Why Now? Multicultural Communities and the Voice | ECCV Forum

Date: Monday 25 September 2023     Time: 6pm to 8:30pm
Location: Coburg Town Hall, 90 Bell Street Concert Hall, Coburg

On 14 October, Australians will vote on whether or not to enshrine a First Nations Voice to Parliament in the Constitution. The upcoming referendum is a landmark moment in our country's history, and its result will have major impacts not only for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but for all Australians.

So, what does the referendum mean? What does a First Nations Voice aim to achieve, why is it important and how will it affect multicultural communities?

All these questions and more will be answered at our forum on Monday, 25 September. The event will involve an in-depth panel discussion about the referendum and the importance of recognising First Peoples in the Constitution, followed by an audience Q&A.

Joining us on the panel will be special guests:

  • Azmeena Hussain OAM, Islamic Museum of Australia Chairperson and Principal Lawyer at Maurice Blackburn
  • Aunty Esme Bamblett, CEO of Aboriginal Advancement League and member of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria
  • Professor Mark Rose, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Strategy and Innovation at Deakin University
  • Sheena Watt MP, Member for Northern Metropolitan
  • Dr Shireen Morris, Senior Lecturer at Macquarie Law School and Director of the Radical Centre Reform Lab
  • Moderator: Maria Dimopoulos AM, Director of Myriad Kofkin Global and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Federation University's National Centre for Reconciliation, Truth & Justice.

This event is free, but registrations are essential. Light refreshments will be provided. Click here to reserve a spot.
