 ill\, Professor of Intercultural Studies at RMIT University\, has been a w
 orld leading researcher and teacher in the areas of immigrant\, cross-cult
 ural and international studies for more than three decades. His Ph.D. was 
 a study of family environment and the bilingual skills of Italo-Australian
  children. His many publications and research projects have focussed on ma
 ny immigrant and refugee groups in Australia: Argentinian\, British\, Camb
 odian\, Chilean\, Dutch\, Filipino\, Greek\, Italian\, Lebanese\, Maltese\
 , Polish\, Turkish\, Uruguayan and Vietnamese\, and he has conducted resea
 rch in Japan\, the Philippines\, Switzerland and Viet Nam. His areas of in
 terest have been in immigrant\, multicultural and international education\
 , cross-cultural communication\, bilingualism and biculturalism\, ethnic m
 inority youth\, immigrant settlement\, ethnic community development\, worl
 d population movements\, cultural diversity policy development and evaluat
 ion\, intermarriage\, international students and\, more recently\, religio
 n and globalization.\nProfessor Des Cahill is chair of Religions for Peace
  Australia\, and represents Australia on Religions for Peace Asia of which
  he is co-president and deputy moderator. DR BERHAN AHMED: At the age of 1
 5\, Berhan Ahmed became a refugee from Eritrea. He was awarded a scholarsh
 ip to study in Egypt and\, in 1987\, came to Australia as a refugee.  From
  these humble beginnings he has gone on to complete his PhD in Agricultura
 l Science and is now a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbour
 ne. Dr Berhan Ahmed has been instrumental in building bridges between the 
 African and wider Australian communities\, influencing policy decisions an
 d forging relationships with politicians\, community\, business leaders an
 d philanthropic organisations.  He encourages people to focus on the thing
 s that unite us as human beings\, not the superficial differences.  He ini
 tiated and implemented a number of projects for Melbourne's African commun
 ity to raise the standard of living\, educational engagement and achieveme
 nt\, level of employment\, and integration.  He has personally supported m
 any newly-arrived refugees\, and is always there to offer guidance and a h
 elping hand through the difficult process of arriving in a new country aft
 er traumatic experience. Dr Berhan Ahmed was selected as Victorian Austral
 ian of the Year in 2009 and is currently the Chairperson of the African Th
 ink Tank.Free parking during the time of the symposium may be available al
