In the coming years, the Australian people will vote in a new referendum to formally recognise Indigenous Australians in the national Constitution.
It is nearly 50 years since the monumental 1967 referendum on Aboriginal affairs that was supported by an unprecedented and unrepeated nine in every ten Australians. Today's many advocates for constitutional recognition, including both major political parties and a surging number of ordinary Australians, hope to repeat that significant achievement in a new referendum.
Noel Pearson, the renowned Indigenous activist and Chairman of the Cape York Group, is delivering a special, one-off Melbourne lecture on the case for this landmark constitutional reform.
Noel is a prominent Indigenous leader, land rights activist and lawyer, having completed his articles at Arnold Bloch Leibler in Melbourne. He comes from the Guugu Yimidhirr community of Hopevale on the South Eastern Cape York Peninsula.
Noel is a vocal supporter of constitutional reform and he is a leading national policy figure working to close the gap in Indigenous disadvantage. This January, Noel was named 'The Australian' newspaper's 2014 Australian of the Year.
Join the Australasian Union of Jewish Students and the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation Commission for this special lecture on Tuesday 8 April 2014. Doors open at 6:45 pm for a 7:00 pm start, and tickets must be pre-purchased.
The evening will also feature presentations from the co-Chair of the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians, Mr Mark Leibler AC, and The Hon Alan Tudge MP, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
