Gantan-sai (Shinto)

Gantan-sai is the Shinto celebration of the new year (oshogatsu). This day is one of the most popular for shrine visits, as many pray for inner renewal, good health and prosperity. During the seven days of the holiday, people visit each other's homes to offer good wishes for the coming year.
