What does it mean to be a neighbour: Darebin Interfaith Council

From February 26, 2014 06:00 until February 26, 2014 14:00

Darebin Interfaith Council invites you to:

Breakfast Seminar Living compassionately - What does it mean to be a neighbour?

Date: Wednesday 26th February 7:00 for 7:30am start
Location:  Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre, Cnr Bell Street & St. George’s Road, Preston

The Darebin Interfaith Council (DIFC) acts as a reference group to the City of Darebin. Since 2006, the DIFC has hosted annual interfaith breakfast seminars which have proven to be excellent occasions for engagement and dialogue between councillors, local religious leaders, faith representatives, and council officers throughout the Darebin municipality.

For many years, the DIFC has endeavoured to build compassionate communities through being on the forefront of human rights causes in our local community. This has included speaking out on a number of justice issues including the need to support asylum seekers and refugees. This year’s event will inspire participants to consider “What does it mean to be a neighbour?”, and explores this theme through the current asylum seeker issue.

Keynote Speaker: David Manne
David Manne is the Executive Director of the Refugee & Immigration Legal Centre (RILC), the largest provider of free legal assistance to disadvantaged migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in Australia. He has headed several successful High Court challenges including against the Government’s ‘offshore processing’ regime, ‘Malaysian Solution’, as well as in the case of adverse security assessment and indefinite detention of a refugee. Recently, David was appointed to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Advisory Board of Eminent Persons.
