On Tuesday 1st of April 2014, the National Council of Jewish Women in Australia (Vic) together with Jewish Aid hosted a Women’s Intergenerational Interfaith Model Passover Seder, the purpose of which was to provide opportunities for people of diverse faiths to learn about Jewish festivals and traditions in a participatory experience, whilst promoting friendship and understanding.
The Intergenerational Interfaith Model Seder for Women (facilitated by Frances Prince, a well known Jewish educator) was a great success with approximately 70 participants. Faith groups represented included Islamic, Baha’i, Anglican, Sikh, Catholic and Jewish.
Participants were girls around the age of 12 (Bat Mitzvah age) together with their mothers, grandmothers or aunts. It was wonderful to see young girls introduced to interfaith dialogue, and to watch them share the richness of intergenerational relationships and the passing-on of family and faith traditions.
“Explaining Jewish customs and rituals to a younger generation can only serve to develop increased tolerance and a greater understanding of the Jewish way of life” said Annette Sweet, Program Manager “It was a delight to see the students interacting and enjoying the experience” said Sweet.
Feedback from participants was positive and indicated the opportunity to learn was appreciated.
“My daughter, Katrina, and I attended the Seder last night and both of us found it very interesting and enjoyable. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and it was fascinating to learn more about your Passover traditions. Katrina is a Year 7 student at Star of the Sea College and it was a great opportunity for her to learn about your faith and culture. Thank you again for inviting us and providing the chance to share this with you.” - Penny
“A heartfelt thank you for your beautiful welcoming and enlightening dinner last night. Mary and I felt very touched and loved being there. Mary will look forward to sharing her experience at Shelford. We appreciate your openness and inclusion. It has given us another dimension to the Passover we have also studied and loved.” - Catherine
The Intergenerational Interfaith Model Seder was made possible through a Victorian Multicultural Commission Multifaith & Interfaith Grant.
